Career Opportunities & Research Exploration (CORE)

CORE (Career Opportunities and Research Experience), formerly known as the Opportunities Fellowship Program (OFP), is a cohort-based program within the Bright Success Center that empowers UC Merced scholars to explore diverse career fields, with a strong focus on student and academic affairs. Designed to support the future demographics of higher education, CORE prioritizes the development of low-income, first-generation, and historically marginalized students, including students of color and those from underserved communities.

Through CORE, scholars engage in undergraduate research and experiential learning projects that promote academic, personal, and professional growth. Participants also enroll in a 1-unit course that connects their academic interests with real-world project goals and career pathways.

CORE aims to diversify the fields of student affairs and academic affairs by equipping scholars with the skills, knowledge, and leadership experience needed to thrive in and shape the future of higher education.

About the Program:

•  CORE (formerly the Opportunities Fellowship Program) connects UC Merced scholars with experiential learning opportunities across campus.
•  Projects are developed in collaboration with faculty, departments, and campus units and are distinct from traditional student employment.
•  Each project must have clearly defined deliverables and a designated mentor to guide the scholar.
•  Scholars commit 8–10 hours per week to their project.
•  Enrollment in a 1-unit course (fall or spring semester) is required as part of the program.
•  Projects will take place during the 2025–2026 academic year, running from September 2025 through April 2026.
•  Scholars will present their completed work at the CORE Showcase in late April 2026.
•  Upon successful completion of all requirements, scholars receive a fellowship award through the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
